Exploring the English Coastal Path from Sandown to Ryde via Bembridge, Isle of Wight: A Scenic Hiking Journey of Discovery 2024

Embarking on a coastal walk is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in nature, breathe in the fresh sea air, and uncover hidden treasures along the way. One of my favourite walks in England is the coastal path from Sandown to Ryde via Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. The island is renowned for its stunning coastal landscapes. From rugged cliffs to sandy beaches, charming villages and historical landmarks, every step offers a new vista to admire and capture in your memories.


In this blog post, I will share the route of the coastal path walk and explore the reasons why it is a must-do for any nature enthusiast or adventure seeker.


Route Description:

The coastal path walk from Sandown to Ryde via Bembridge spans approximately 12 miles, offering a moderate level of difficulty suitable for most walkers. The whole route is very well signposted and easy to navigate.

Walking Route Step by Step:

Step One : Sandown

From the seafront, follow the blue Coastal Path signs along the promenade towards Culver Down Cliffs.

Step Two: Culver Down

As you follow the path uphill for 2 km, you will encounter Culver Down: a prominent chalk headland offering panoramic views of the surrounding coastline. The views from here are simply awe-inspiring, with the shimmering sea stretching out as far as the eye can see.

Step Three: Whitecliff Bay

Continuing the walk, you arrive at Whitecliff Bay, a hidden gem nestled between towering cliffs. This secluded bay boasts a pristine sandy beach and crystal-clear waters.

Step Four: Bembridge

Next on the journey is the charming village of Bembridge, with its picturesque harbour filled with colourful boats. Explore the village's quaint streets, visit the local shops, and indulge in some delicious seafood at one of the waterfront restaurants.

Points of Interest in Bembridge include: Bembridge Fort, a historical fortification that played a crucial role in defending the island during times of conflict; a picturesque harbour; a historic windmill that offers insight into the island's agricultural heritage and finally, Its iconic Lifeboat Station. Here you can learn about the courageous work of the RNLI and the vital role they play in saving lives at sea.

Step Five: St Helens and the Duver

Continuing along the coastal path, as you approach the halfway point, you'll reach the the charming church of Dt Helens and St Helens Duver: a nature reserve with sand dunes and a sandy beach. Take time to explore the nature reserve's trails, and admire the diverse flora and fauna that call this area home.

Step Six: Seagrove Bay

The walk then leads you to Seagrove Bay, another hidden gem with its pristine sandy beach and tranquil atmosphere. Take a break and enjoy the serenity of this secluded bay.

Step Seven: Seaview Village

Continuing along the path, you arrive at Seaview Village, a quaint coastal village with its charming cottages and stunning sea views. Walk through the village's narrow streets, browse the local shops, or savour a meal at one of the cosy cafes or restaurants.

Step Eight: Puckpool Park

As you approach Ryde, you pass through Puckpool Park, a beautiful green space with a cafe and picnic areas. A perfect spot to grab a coffee while admiring the surrounding natural beauty.

Step Nine: Appley Park

The final stretch of the path meanders along the coastline at Appley Park, treating you to glorious panoramic views of the English Channel and the rugged cliffs that line the shore. Enjoy the views of the Solent, and perhaps catch a beautiful sunset before reaching Ryde.

Step Ten: Ryde Pier

The journey ends at Ryde Pier, an iconic landmark that stretches out into the Solent. Take a moment to appreciate the views, watch the ferries come and go, and reflect on the beautiful coastal walk you have just completed.


Public Transport:

  • The island provides an excellent bus service. With a comprehensive network of routes, it provides easy access to the coastal path. The service is also a cost-effective choice for getting around as all single fares ,to any destination on the island, are capped at £2 per person until December 2024.

  • The train service from Sandown to Ryde is also a convenient way to travel between these two popular destinations on the Isle of Wight. The train serves several stations along the way, including: Lake, Shanklin, Smallbrook Junction, and Ryde Esplanade. Using the train allows for a quick and efficient journey, avoiding traffic and providing scenic views of the island's countryside.


Getting to the Island from the Mainland:

To get to Ryde on the Isle of Wight, there are several ferry options available. The most popular ferry route is the FastCat service from Portsmouth to Ryde, operated by Wightlink. This route offers regular crossings throughout the day and takes approximately 22 minutes. Another option is the passenger-only foot ferry from Southsea to Ryde, operated by Hovertravel, which takes around 10 minutes. Both options provide a convenient and efficient way to reach Ryde from the mainland.
